Hours Calculator — Work Out Hours Between Two Times

This free hours calculator computes the exact difference between a start time and an end time, deducting any unpaid break, and presents the result in hours and minutes, total minutes, and decimal hours — the format used in most payroll and billing systems.

The calculator also handles overnight shifts: if the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g. starting at 22:00 and finishing at 06:30), it automatically adds 24 hours to the end time so the correct span is calculated. An optional hourly rate field produces an instant pay estimate.

What Are Decimal Hours?

Decimal hours express time as a single number where the fractional part represents minutes as a proportion of 60. They are used in payroll, billing software, and project management tools because they can be multiplied directly by an hourly rate.

MinutesDecimal hoursFraction
0 min0.000/60
15 min0.2515/60 = ¼
20 min0.3320/60 = ⅓
30 min0.5030/60 = ½
45 min0.7545/60 = ¾
60 min1.0060/60 = 1 full hour

Formula: Decimal hours = (total minutes ÷ 60)

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter the start time and end time in the calculator, add any break duration in minutes, and click Calculate. The result shows total hours and minutes, total minutes, decimal hours, and an optional pay estimate if you enter a hourly rate.
If the end time is earlier than the start time (e.g. start 22:30, end 06:00), the calculator automatically assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours to the end time. The result note will say "Overnight shift" so you know this logic was applied.
Decimal hours express the total time as a number with a decimal fraction. For example, 7 hours and 30 minutes = 7.5 decimal hours. To convert minutes to decimal: divide the minutes by 60. This format is used in payroll, billing, and project tracking systems.
Enter the break duration in minutes. The calculator subtracts this from the gross time difference to give net hours worked. For example, a 9-hour shift with a 30-minute break gives 8.5 net hours. If break time exceeds gross time, the calculator shows an error.
Enter your hourly rate in the optional pay field. Pay estimate = decimal hours × hourly rate. For example, 8.5 hours × £15/hr = £127.50. The pay estimate uses the same currency symbol shown on the rate input. Taxes and deductions are not included.
This calculator computes one shift at a time. For weekly totals, calculate each shift individually and add the decimal hours together. For example, 5 shifts of 8.5 hours each = 42.5 total hours.
The SVG arc chart visualises your shift as a coloured arc on a 24-hour clock ring. Midnight is at the top. The worked period (after break deduction) is shown in cyan; the full 24 hours forms the track. This makes it easy to see where your shift sits in the day at a glance.
