Discount Calculator — Price After Discount, Savings & Tax

This free discount calculator computes the exact amount you save, the discounted price before tax, and the final price you pay after tax — in seconds. It also supports Reverse mode: if you know a sale price and the discount percentage, it calculates what the original price was before the discount.

Whether you're comparing sale prices in a shop, calculating bulk-order savings, or verifying checkout totals, this tool handles the maths so you don't have to.

How Discount Calculations Work

Forward Mode (standard)
Discount Amount = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)

Discounted Price = Original Price − Discount Amount

Tax Amount = Discounted Price × (Tax % ÷ 100)

Final Price = Discounted Price + Tax Amount
Tax is applied after the discount — the standard retail convention worldwide.
Reverse Mode (find original price)
Pre-tax Sale Price = Final Price ÷ (1 + Tax % ÷ 100)

Original Price = Pre-tax Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount % ÷ 100)

Discount Amount = Original Price − Pre-tax Sale Price
Enter the price you paid (including tax) to recover the original pre-discount, pre-tax price.

Stacking Discounts — Are They Additive?

When multiple discounts apply (e.g. a 20% member discount on top of a 30% sale), they are not simply added together. Each discount applies to the price remaining after the previous one:

Step 1 Original price: $100 − 30% = $70
Step 2 Member price: $70 − 20% = $56
Result Effective discount: 44% (not 50%)

The formula: Effective % = 1 − (1 − d₁)(1 − d₂). For stacked discounts, run this calculator twice — first with the sale discount, then apply the membership discount to the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Enter the original price and discount percentage in Forward mode, then click Calculate. The result shows the discount amount, the discounted price, optional tax, and the final price you pay. The savings badge shows your total saving at a glance.
Reverse mode recovers the original price from a sale price. Enter the price you paid (or saw on the sale tag), the discount percentage that was applied, and optionally the tax rate. The calculator works backwards to show what the item cost before the discount.
Discount first, then tax — the standard retail convention. The discount reduces the price, and sales tax is calculated on the reduced (discounted) price. This matches how VAT, GST, and most sales taxes are applied in practice.
No — stacked discounts are multiplicative, not additive. A 30% sale plus a 20% member discount gives an effective discount of 44%, not 50%. Each discount applies to the price remaining after the previous one. Use the calculator twice: apply the first discount to get a new price, then apply the second to that result.
Yes. Enter any value like 7.5%, 12.25%, or 33.33%. The calculator accepts two decimal places of precision on both the discount rate and the price.
The calculator supports USD ($), EUR (€), GBP (£), JPY (¥), CAD (C$), AUD (A$), and KRW (₩). The selected symbol appears next to the price fields and in the result. Results are rounded to 2 decimal places for all currencies except JPY/KRW, which round to whole numbers.
If you know both the original and final price: Discount % = ((Original − Final) ÷ Original) × 100. For example, if an item was $80 and you paid $56, the discount is ((80 − 56) ÷ 80) × 100 = 30%. Use the Percentage Calculator for this type of calculation.
