Metric vs Imperial: A Brief Guide
The metric system (SI) is used by the vast majority of countries and is the standard in science and industry. It is a decimal system — every unit is a power of 10 of the base unit (e.g. 1 km = 1,000 m, 1 kg = 1,000 g). Imperial and US customary units are still widely used in the United States and partially in the UK, with less intuitive conversion factors (e.g. 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet).
For data units, two systems coexist: decimal (1 KB = 1,000 bytes, used by storage manufacturers) and binary (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes, used by operating systems). The binary toggle in the Data and Data Transfer categories switches between these two systems.
For temperature, conversions are not multiplicative — they use formulas: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32, and K = °C + 273.15.
