Fuel Cost Calculator — Trip Gas Cost & Consumption

This free fuel cost calculator estimates how much you'll spend on fuel for any trip — whether a daily commute, a cross-country road trip, or a business journey. Enter the distance, the price of fuel at the pump, and your vehicle's fuel consumption rating to get instant, accurate results.

The calculator supports both Metric (km and litres per 100 km, L/100 km) and Imperial (miles and miles per gallon, MPG) unit systems, and includes 8 popular currency symbols for the fuel price input.

How Fuel Cost Is Calculated

Metric (km + L/100 km)
Fuel needed = Distance (km) ÷ 100 × Consumption (L/100 km)

Total cost = Fuel needed × Price per litre

Cost per km = Total cost ÷ Distance
Imperial (miles + MPG)
Fuel needed = Distance (miles) ÷ MPG

Total cost = Fuel needed × Price per gallon

Cost per mile = Total cost ÷ Distance

MPG vs L/100 km — Which Should You Use?

MPG (miles per gallon) and L/100 km (litres per 100 kilometres) measure the same thing — fuel efficiency — but they work inversely. A higher MPG means better efficiency. A lower L/100 km means better efficiency.

L/100 kmMPG (UK)MPG (US)Efficiency
4.070.658.8Excellent (hybrid/EV range extender)
5.056.547.1Very good (compact/hybrid)
6.047.139.2Good (modern compact)
7.040.433.6Average (mid-size sedan)
8.035.329.4Below average (larger car)
10.028.223.5Poor (SUV / older vehicle)
12.023.519.6Very poor (truck / large SUV)

To convert: MPG (US) = 235.21 ÷ L/100 km

CO₂ Estimate

The calculator also shows an approximate CO₂ emission for your trip based on standard emission factors:

Petrol/Gasoline ≈ 2.31 kg CO₂ per litre  |  ≈ 8.74 kg CO₂ per US gallon
Diesel ≈ 2.68 kg CO₂ per litre  |  ≈ 10.15 kg CO₂ per US gallon

The calculator uses the petrol/gasoline factor as the default — a widely applicable average. Actual emissions vary by fuel type, vehicle age, and engine condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Metric mode: Fuel needed (L) = Distance ÷ 100 × L/100 km. Total cost = Fuel needed × Price per litre. In Imperial mode: Fuel needed (gal) = Distance (miles) ÷ MPG. Total cost = Fuel needed × Price per gallon. Both modes also show cost per km/mile and a CO₂ estimate.
Metric mode uses kilometres for distance and litres per 100 km (L/100 km) for consumption. Imperial mode uses miles for distance and miles per gallon (MPG) for consumption. The fuel price is per litre in Metric and per gallon in Imperial. Switch the toggle and all labels update automatically.
L/100 km measures how many litres are consumed per 100 km travelled — fewer litres means more efficient. MPG measures how many miles you travel per gallon — more miles per gallon means more efficient. They are inversely related: MPG (US) = 235.21 ÷ L/100 km.
A modern compact or mid-size car averages 6–8 L/100 km (30–40 MPG US). Hybrids achieve 4–5 L/100 km (47–59 MPG US). SUVs and trucks typically use 10–14 L/100 km (17–24 MPG US). Check your vehicle's official fuel economy rating or fill-up history for the most accurate figure.
Not directly — this calculator is designed for combustion-engine vehicles using petrol/diesel. For EVs, you'd need to enter energy consumption (kWh/100 km) and the cost per kWh. A dedicated EV cost calculator handles this more accurately.
The estimate is mathematically accurate based on your inputs. Real-world fuel use varies due to driving style, traffic, speed, hills, air conditioning, tyre pressure, and vehicle load. For the most accurate result, use your vehicle's actual fuel consumption from a recent fill-up rather than the manufacturer's official rating.
USD ($), EUR (€), GBP (£), JPY (¥), CAD (C$), AUD (A$), KRW (₩), and INR (₹). The selected symbol appears on the fuel price input and in the result. Choose the currency that matches where you'll be buying fuel.
Yes — simply double your one-way distance before entering it. For example, if the one-way drive is 300 km, enter 600 km to get the full round-trip fuel cost and consumption.
